A first cruise for the study of the reproductive biology of the Patagonian toothfish near Burdwood Bank has concluded

24 Nov, 2023

Onboard the commercial fishing vessel SAN ARAWA II, owned by the company ESTREMAR, scientists from the National Institute of Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) of Argentina examined population aspects of the Patagonian toothfish (Dissosticus eleginoides), with a particular focus on the reproductive dynamics of the species near Burdwood Bank.

In addition to reproductive studies, samples of muscle and otoliths were collected to conduct studies on stable isotopes and microchemistry. This survey marks the first in a series of cruises to be carried out throughout a complete annual cycle to study this valuable fisheries resource in the Argentine Sea.
